The Future of Information Systems

Thomas Martin, Holy Family University

The Internet is the consensus choice as the major technological development of the 20th century. As we progress into the latter stages of the first decade of the 21st century, even more fundamental catalytic change is underway. Dr. Martin will address the future of society as influenced by five compelling forces:

  • Information Systems Communications
  • Information Systems Technology
  • Societal Issues of Information Systems
  • Information Systems Security
  • Business Utilization of Information Systems

The conclusion topic of the talk will focus on the “Singularity”: when machines reach the intelligence of humans, when robots are ubiquitous, and perform all manual labor, when man-machine interfaces include brain-to-machine communications...

About the presenter, Thomas Martin, Ph.D.
  Thomas Martin, Ph.D., is currently the Holy Family University's Chair of the MIS Department, responsible for undergraduate and graduate programs in Information Systems. Prior to joining the University's facility, he was Chief Executive Officer and Division President of five high-technology companies, ranging from multi-billion dollar companies to startups and turnarounds.  Martin founded and built the first successful speech recognition company in the U.S. He has over 50 papers published and 19 patents awarded. He was elected a member of the Computer Industry Hall of Fame in 1983, and also received an award from President Ronald Reagan "for pioneering the commercial applications of speech recognition."
